A detailed financial and operating assessment helped Little Antlers Learning Center and its nonprofit parent organization, Mid-State Health Center, understand the choices ahead and develop a practical roadmap for the center’s future.

The Situation
Little Antlers Learning Center is a nonprofit early childhood program serving infants through preschool in central New Hampshire. Although capacity and enrollment had grown significantly in recent years, the center was operating at a substantial deficit.
Leaders at Little Antlers and Mid-State Health Center wanted a clearer understanding of what was driving the financial challenge and what could realistically be done about it. The questions extended beyond the annual budget. They included how enrollment, age-group mix, staffing, tuition, classroom configuration, and other costs affected the center’s financial performance, as well as which changes could improve sustainability while protecting program quality.
The Work
BeyondCare combined detailed financial analysis with understanding of the center’s day-to-day operations. Jay visited Little Antlers, observed the program in operation, and spoke with leaders and staff about the realities behind the numbers.
The assessment examined the economics of the program and its classrooms, including enrollment patterns, staffing, tuition, discounts, funding, and operating costs. BeyondCare developed scenarios to show how different choices could affect the center’s financial position and evaluated practical opportunities to strengthen enrollment, manage costs, and bring in additional funding.
The analysis was translated into a roadmap for leadership and the Board. It identified the most important near-term priorities, clarified the implications of different options, and established decision points for responding as conditions changed.
What Changed
The work gave Little Antlers and Mid-State a shared understanding of the center’s financial and operational position. It clarified the importance of enrollment and classroom utilization, identified focused opportunities for improvement, and showed what choices might be needed under different future conditions.
Several decisions made during the engagement were already beginning to produce encouraging results, including a reduction in the center’s projected deficit. The roadmap placed that early progress in a longer-term context and clarified the continued work needed to strengthen financial sustainability.
Together, the early financial improvement and the practical decision framework gave leadership and the Board a stronger basis for decisions about the center’s future.
